Shannon is a self-taught artist living in Vancouver Washington (Portland, OR metro area) with her family.. Starting from an early age. Through her teen years, she had practiced madonnari (Italian street painting), pencil portraits, and many other mediums of art. She began using hand-embroidery as art in her early adult life. Creating iconic portraits and free-form abstract pieces. Her work was featured in many online articles and local magazines. She was featured in Sarah Whittle's, The Needlecraft Stitch Directory under the hand-embroidery style section. She collaborated with artist, Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching, in a group show at UCLA and did stitching for patterns for Sublime Stitching.
In 2020 she started creating paintings in her home. She has continued with the free-form abstract style, using acrylic paint and paint markers on small size canvases.
Shannon Genova’s paintings are completely
spontaneous and are intuitively developed while in a meditative state,
listening to music on her headphones. Usually, listening to Hip Hop, Classic
Rock, New Wave, or Indie music.
She chooses vibrant colors while organically placing them in a pleasing composition until completion. She is naturally drawn towards patterns and an equal composition of shapes while still keeping an abstract flow. She creates in solitude as a way to process stress and trauma. It has always been a therapeutic process for her.
In recent years she has learned that she is autistic. Her children and spouse are as well. That realization has really had a positive impact on her and her family's life. Learning how to unmask and express to others her natural talents, special interests, and how to communicate her limitations in life, and how to advocate for herself and her family. She also learned recently that she has Hypermobile-Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which has impacted the way she was formerly creating art. That led to her change from embroidery to painting on smaller, more manageable canvas sizes and the easier convenient use of paint markers.
Shannon's Artworks are available as Originals. She is participating in our Art with a Purpose Mission and 25% of her proceeds go to the two different projects she is being part of.
